The GISciences Program in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas invites the UTD community to explore the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems [GIS] during a hands-on one-and-a-half days workshop featuring the GIS software Maptitude.

No prior GIS knowledge is required but workshop participants should be familiar with the Windows operating system.

Feel free to distribute the workshop flyer to interested parties.

Workshop Objectives

The main objective of this workshop is to provide insights into how GIS with its associated spatial data can be utilized to support a broad range of decision making processes.

To accomplish this goal, workshop participants are given an opportunity to explore via examples and in tutorials socio-economic, business and management as well as criminological, political and demographic GIS applications. Each participant should have acquired by the end of the workshop the necessary skills

  • to import common geo-referenced data into Maptitude and use the data rich environment, which comes with Maptitude.
  • to perform common spatial inquires within and across different thematic map layers.
  • to apply frequently used spatial analysis techniques to address research questions with an underlying spatial domain.
  • to convey their research findings effectively to their peers with informative and appealing maps.
  • to proceed independently in acquiring new GIS skills and to seek, if needed, help from a GIS specialists.

Workshop participants, who are interested in obtaining an unofficial certificate, can do so by completing a small GIS project after the workshop.

The Maptitude GIS Software

We will be using the comprehensive, yet comfortably mastered GIS software Maptitude by Caliper Inc. Maptitude combines low costs of ownership with high levels of productivity and a benign learning curve. If needed, Maptitude integrates well with other more specialized spatial and aspatial data analytics environments. It is packed with a wealth of data supporting immediately many decision making tasks.

Feel free to explore Caliper's training videos to decide if this software and its associated datasets will help you to accomplish your spatial analyses and mapping tasks. Online tutorials to perform specific GIS tasks with Maptitude can be found at Richard Marsden's website https://www.mapping-tools.com/howto/ .

Post-Workshop Tasks

  • Please provide us with your feedback on [a] what went well, [b] what should be improved and [c] what you would like to see in future GIS workshops at the evaluation link (inactive).
Notice: this link will only accept feedback from Saturday, March 31, to Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
  • In order to obtain an unofficial certificate that you successfully complete the GIS workshop please follow the guidelines outlining at the certificate link.
